About the Artist

Marilynn started going blind at birth with a genetic deficiency called Retinitis Pigmentosa, a condition which affects vision in many different forms. She had no idea she had this disease and was not diagnosed until 19 years of age. She grew up not having any peripheral vision. She did not understand why people would consider her a bit of a snob because she would walk right by them without realizing they were there! Once, while working the Democratic Convention in 1960 as a Golden Girl host she was thoroughly scolded for not acknowledging John F. Kennedy as he walked beside her. She never even knew he was there!

Marilynn taught Business Education at North Hollywood High School for 32 years and retired because her eye disease eventually caused a hearing loss as well. She had been successfully teaching for years nearly blind. But she realized her career as a teacher had come to an end when her hearing loss became so severe it affected her abilities to continue. It was the saddest day of her life to leave her students.

She set out to create a new chapter in her life. One day she remembered a clay duck she had made in the second grade and felt inspired to work with clay again. She found a ceramics class at Visually Handicapped Adults of the Valley and started creating the pieces you see displayed today. Marilynn is also an avid Bridge player, has a keen memory for numbers and names and enjoys Poodle play dates.

Her Poodle Plates are inspired by her 1st Standard Poodle Guide Dog "Packer" and newest Poodle Guide Dog "Doc" from Pilot Dogs in Columbus, Ohio. "Packer" brought laughter and joy into Marilynn's life and she hopes you will enjoy her Poodle Collection and other pieces as well. She also acknowledges and thanks all her friends for their wonderful help! All are food safe & we recommend hand washing.
